Remote booting Windows 95

The Cathedral School of Uppsala, Sweden
announces new system implementation.

The system is built around similar PC network clients with the TCP/IP
Boot-PROM manufactured by InCom Information & Communication GmbH, Neuss,
Germany installed on the network adapter. The computers are provided
with a selectable boot-image by a Unixserver from Sun Microsystems.

The computers are quickly reinstalled at every boot with the selected
operating system, making it virtually impossible to damage the installation.
The boot images are placed read only on the Unix server which allows a
safe and completely centralised systems management.

The supported operating systems are Red-Hat Linux, DOS, Windows 3.11 and
Windows 95 (possibly also Windows NT). The Windows 95 installation is
not restricted in any way and we have choosen Samba to mount
homedirectories, application-drives and printers.

In order to support the different platforms with extra functionalities
we have developed a set of client-server based Java Applets for
on demand account repair, homepage "unlocking" and change of password.
The Java Applets are placed on the schools homepage.

The system is based on the excellent work by Marc Vuilleumier Stuckelberg,
Sandro Viale and David Clerc at the CUI, University of Geneva.
The solution is documented in: Linux Remote-Boot mini-HOWTO: Configuring
Remote-Boot Workstations with Red-Hat Linux, DOS, Windows 3.11 and Windows 95.
