Redhat Linux and Samba crashing

Hi Folks,

A while back I sent a asked a question about Running the Quakeworld
server and samba together under Redhat Linux 4.2. I was experiencing
complete system lock ups.

Anyway, I think I have narrowed the problem down. It's nothing to do
with the Quakeworld server though.

I can reliably (!?) make my Redhat Linux system crash (totally seize up)
by running this simple batch file below on the single Win95 machine I
have attached to the linux server.

after doing a 'net use r: \\server\share', I run the following from a
dos box under '95. The batch file is called 'test.bat'

<begin test.bat>
echo d | xcopy \localdir r:\serverdir /s
deltree /y r:\serverdir
test.bat
<end of test.bat>

_Every_ time I run this, after about 3-5 times round the loop, the linux
server will crash. No error messages or anything in the logs. The Win95
client just reports 'Invalid path' or something, but doesn't crash.

As you can see, it just copies a local directory tree onto the server
(about 15 meg or so), deletes it, and repeats. The 'echo d | ' bit just
saves me having to press 'd' every time.

Everything else seems to work fine (browsing, printing, moving files
with '95 explorer)

I am running samba 1.9.17alpha4 and Linux kernel version 2.0.30. on an
AMD486DX4 with 8Mb

I have tried the following to fix it without success:

1) tried samba 1.9.16p11,
2) tried Linux kernel version 2.0.27.
3) recompiling everything (kernel and samba) with the latest gcc
(2.7.2.2)
4) trying FAST_SHARE_MODES on and off
5) Removing all unneccessary daemons and drivers.
6) Adding more memory
7) changing IRQ's etc
8) Changing my IDE controller
9) Fiddling in the BIOS settings
10) Sacrificing chickens ;-)

Nothing makes any difference. Maybe it's just my flaky old 486 to blame.

If somebody out there has a similar setup to me, I would love to know if
the above batch file works/fails on their system. It's really driving me
nuts and I can't think of anything else to try.

Help much appreciated,
