: Access and Browsing problems.

Hi there,

I am new to using SAMBA on VMS and having the following problem to try an
work out.

Basic setup
VMS 7.3-2 with TCPIP 5.4 installed and working on ES47 platform
SAMBA 2.2.8

I have managed to get the software installed and possibly working as the
installation failed a couple of times until I copied the SMB.CONF_TEMPLATE
file to be SMB.CONF. I then also had to define the TCPIP service SMBD as
the installation hadn't done this for me.

I think the installation is working correctly after changing the SMB.CONF to
match the settings for the network and also by run SMBPASSWD to join the NT
Domain we are working on.

I can browse the server and see the Home share and connect without any
problems, but that's where the problem starts.

My problem is that either VMS, the Domain or WinXP is unable to work with
the Home directories on the VMS server. The XP Browser seems to be unable
to refresh and also to see the files in the VMS directory properly. If I
stop and Restart the SAMBA services things reset ok, but the problem
continues to happen. There is also a problem that "New Folders" seem to be
created as if by magic.

An example is that I used Explorer to start a new Word document in the
Share, it let me create the Icon, but then I Double clicked on it, Word
reported the following error that the file couldn't be found, yet the Icon
was shown. The other is that I Delete a file, the Browser refreshes shows
the file gone, but if I manually refresh after the file is still there. Is
the problem WinXP, Domain access or VMS File protection or all 3 not working
together.

Here is the SMB.CONF that I have current setup.

[global]
   workgroup = workgroup
   netbios name = ALPHAES47
   security = DOMAIN
   password server = pdcworkgroup
   username map = /SAMBA_ROOT/LIB/smbusers.dat
   dead time = 10
   map archive = no
   printing = bsd
   printcap name = /SYS$SPECIFIC/TCPIP$LPD/TCPIP$PRINTCAP.DAT
   load printers = yes
   print command = print %f/queue=%p/delete/passall/name="""""%s"""""
   lprm command = delete/entry=%j
   default service = default
   preferred master = No
   local master = No
   domain master = No
   guest account = SAMBA__GUEST
   create mask = 0777
   map archive = No
   delete readonly = Yes
   wins support = No
   dns proxy = No
   wins proxy = No
   wins server = 192.168.1.1

; This next option sets a separate log file for each client. Remove
; it if you want a combined log file.
   log file = /samba_root/var/log.%m
   socket options = TCP_NODELAY
;   socket options = SO_REUSEADDR

; You will need a world readable lock directory and "share modes=yes"
; if you want to support the file sharing modes for multiple users
;  of the same files
;  lock directory = /usr/local/samba/var/locks
  share modes = no

[homes]
   comment = Home Directories
   browseable = Yes
   read only = No
;   create mode = 0777
   create mode = 0750
;   directory mode = 0777
   valid users = %S
   writeable = Yes
   force user = %S
;   fstype = Ods5

Are there any changes that need to be done to the SMB.CONF to solve my
problem, or is it best to Remove SAMBA complete and Reinstall clean. Which
may or may not be all that easy, or to work round the issues and problems
that might be there.

Can you also help me verify that all the systems and services that are part
of SAMBA are in and running correctly.

Thanking you in advance.
