Those familiar with VMS know that the version numbers in VMS file names
are not reliable for version control.

Samba presents only the most recent version.  If you have foo.c;1 and
foo.c;2, you will see only foo.c and it will be version ;2.  Perhaps
there is a way to have Samba show multiple versions, but I don't know
it.

Consider CVS, for example, which runs on VMS as well as other platforms.
