Speed on opening up folders in Samba

We have an Alpha 4100 with VMS 7.3-1 operating system and Multinet 4.4.
Samba is running however when we try to access the folders, it takes
forever.  There are numerous files in each folder. Are there any parameters
or fine tuning that can be done to increase the access speed?
