Andrew, this is more an RFC, while it is of a best quality:
I don't want to spend more time on this unless this is something
which *might* be accepted. The problem here is that the soname
bump has already happened, and there's a difficult time going
back.

I'll sure submit it whatever you guys like but I really need some
feedback first. The change itself works.
