Yes, since the very earliest days of LDB, because that is what it was
built for.  Since 2005 or so, eg a decade prior:

    r7667: added a ldb ildap backend, using our internal ldap client
library. Next step is to
    remove the check for the ldap libraries in configure
    (This used to be commit 74841dbb2a86bb1c584b5c26c4cd24a818a65a34)

We have come a long way since then and we are doing much better now at
being a single project.
