Likely urgent release required: NBT flood on startup

G'Day Karolin,

This 4.9 bug looks pretty bad:

We may need an urgent release, so I wanted to write to you to give you
a heads up.

A revert fixing it is on the bug, and here for reference.  I still
don't fully understand the mechansim, someone more steeped in NBT will
need to comment on that.
