Thanks.  I've asked my colleague Joe to look over this and the other
python3 work.  He is a experienced python developer and is keen to help
us get over the python3 hump.   

Please work with him if you can as I (and likely Douglas) will be
leaning fairly heavily on his opinions in order to get this into
master.
