I also don't like the loss of compatibility with platforms or tools that
don't have xz support by default. 6MB more or less is really not much
these days and this does not make out the loss of compatibility and the
headache and extra work that we generate for a lot of people by that change.

Signing the compressed and uncompressed tar ball sounds like a good idea
to me.
