OK.  Do you see a regression compared with the previous behaviour for
master?

We have also observed this failing, even windows to windows.

The main part of this patch (which alters the client side, that is the
join script) wasn't designed to fix that. 

The part that might help a little is the MNAME over-stamp, but that
will won't help your use case. 

(It only helps once a very first DC is demoted, or isn't available).
