Pushed to autobuild...

Last time some of these changes were posted there ended up being a
debate about the possibility of nested event loops due to the nature of
the sync API.  These changes don't make the sync API like that, they
just add some things and clean it up.  There's some good code based
on all of this that we've been sitting on for a long time while waiting
for a resolution.  I think we should just move instead of sitting
still.  :-)

We're looking forward to getting rid of nested event loops in
CTDB!
