The only problem I potentially see is that we had this feature in
3.x, removed it in 4.0, readd it in master (for 4.5) and likely remove it in
4.6 or 4.7 again.

I would not block adding this to master, but we should not announce this as
great new feature in WHATSNEW and external consumers should not use this.
