I have some feedback on the steps provided, or one of them, at least.

The 'make install' step will generally only work if you are root, I
should think.

I think we should encourage people to do most of their work as a
non-root user, so that last step should be 'sudo make install'

We might also link to instructions on how to set up sudo.
