My approach regarding a threadsafe API would be the same as what happened
with libwbclient: From the ground up remove access to global variables
until we end up with a separate API that we can base the current,
compatible one on top of.

I'd rather start supporting Nadya in her efforts instead of implementing
a ldb backend. But that's just my 2ct.
