Very true.  So why Was -DNDEBUG ever added, for something that is never
installed?

BTW, we I'm pretty sure we can remove the whole --enable-selftest
argument, and just build/process these in the not Options.is_install
case, which would in turn allow distributions to run make test in their
package build scripts.
