my take, which seems to align with what Brad says is:

* you need to support AAPL for MS NFS stuff _with OS X SMB server_

* with my patch you'd need it with Samba too, but we could also enable
  this via a smb.conf option

* you don't need AAPL for SFM character mapping

as pointed out by Volker off-list, this needs to be further refined in
order to support VFS modules that don't stack (eg gpfs, zfs). Working
on it...
