No. I added the --xattrs option to the backup script, so it preserves the permissions.

I'm guessing here you are talking about an archive you made with
'star' and not 'tar'.

Did you also use the -acl option ? If not the acls are not stored in
your archive.
ie :
star H=exustar -acl -xattr-linux -c -bz f=destination.star.bz2  ./source_folder
