Andrew and I have spent some time doing background work and we now have
a set of patches that includes:

# adding the extra protection against SD invalidation by changes in the
mapping code

# tests that prove that it works and gives the additional protection

# some updates to vfstest to make it possible to test out the new VFS
operations

# adopt vfs_gpfs to the native blob logic as an example for other VFS
modules
