source3 and source4

Hi,

As part of my GSoC project I started to look at samba source code
(smbclient) to see where the tar code is implemented.

So there are 2 source dir, one for each version, even in tarball
releases of the latest samba4, but the two are mixed because the tar
command line seem to be handled in the source3 dir only. Is this
correct? Why are there 2 versions of smbclient?
I'm not sure I understand this version separation well.
