I'm not aware of any efforts in this area.  Starting on a new protocol
is quite hard, assigning it as a possible GSoC project was perhaps a
little optimistic! :-)

I certainly hope someone takes you up on your offer, it's an area that
we really haven't had the interest/ability to explore yet.
