Understanding DNS on S4

Hi list,

Could someone point me in the direction of a primer on how DNS
(specifically, BIND9) works with S4?

As some of you may recall, I have been having trouble hiving DNS off my
very-old S4 server, in preparation for an upgrade.

It seems that merely copying the zone files and dns.keytab is not
sufficient, since subsequent S4 installs (whether on a new machine or on
the new DNS server) cannot update the DNS, nor upgrade the DNS files via
samba_upgradedns.

Any ideas or tips are much appreciated.
