Somewhere you wrote, that you use Centos 6.x. Yum tells me here, that 
"glibc-common" provides the getent binary:


# yum provides */getent
glibc-common-2.12-1.47.el6.x86_64 : Common binaries and locale data for glibc
Repo        : Base

Filename    : /usr/bin/getent


I have a RHEL6.2 minimal installation here, where this package was already 
installed by default.
