The smbd binary produced by the waf build is suitable for this work.  As
we explain in BUILD_SYSTEMS.txt, you should use the waf build unless you
cannot meet the python requirements. 

(There is an RC bug about our configure tests for quota and ACL support
on more unusual platforms, which will be addressed)
