Thanks for the explanation. I'll certainly bear the locking stuff in 
mind. Miraculously, the locking works from nfs libreoffice and cifs 
msoffice on win7 on the same share. I think it's to do with the little 
lock file they produce. The lock works both ways in that you can only 
open either a copy or read only if a user already has the doc open. Is 
that what we mean by locking?

BTW, we gave up on nfs4 acl's when we discovered it was impossible to 
have a group rw share from a 0022 umask:-(
