Not on the local box; no.  I though of that as soon as I posted the  
message [of course!] so I've "yum install openldap-devel" and am  
recompiling [after a "make distclean; ./configure.developer  
--prefix=/opt/s4"].

That should make the S3 component build with LDAPSAM support [yes?]
