Thanks, this has given me some clues.  Can you please try the attached
patch, it should mean we get more information in the logs?

Also (as a separate run), try running under valgrind:

valgrind /usr/local/samba/sbin/samba -i -M single -d4

This will be slower, but will help if the error is related to illigal
memory access.
