Need help with new installation of Samba 3.5.8

I have a very similar problem, running samba on Debian Squeeze. the only
difference is that nmbd starts correctly (but you were able to get it
started too by appropriate choice of options).

The showstopper is that smbclient fails with:

Receiving SMB: Server stopped responding
session setup failed: Call timed out: server did not respond after 20000
milliseconds

and, moreover, after that happens, an instance of smbd is left running and
consuming a lot of CPU time. (>95%).

I've seen similar messages on other forums, but no useful response from
anyone.
