I have now measured my latest patch with the 100MiB size switch of
behavior) on the whole test.
I get shorter time to complete (16:30 min instead of 20min.)
The Database ends up smaller (~1.1g instead of ~1.3g) although the data
used is almost identical (500 bytes difference on the whole dataset
size).
The top memory used is about 100MiB less (at 3.4g peak) than previous
tests.
