If we agree on binary-only registry data in the LDB database much of the 
conversion code in "ldb.c" could be dropped. But we would break 
compatibility with existing registry databases. I would let the decision 
up to Jelmer who was the original author of this.
Btw. also the s3 registry library uses conversions if I have it in mind 
correctly - so the same story would apply also there.
