Thanks for pushing those changes.  I've updated my s3compat-wip branch
with the small changes needed to work with this new code.  There isn't
as much removal of intrusive #ifdef ENABLE_S3COMPAT as I would like
(because most of my patch was require to bridge the semantic, not syntax
gap), but it's a very good start. 

The next step will of course be to use the new API directly for more
than just lp_workgroup().
