I've applied the whole series to my ldb-fixes branch, which I'm using at
the plugfest for testing.  I had to add a couple more cases where we
needed to set the control, but otherwise it seems to do exactly what I
wanted it to do (which isn't actually what Matthieu wanted and added, so
I've not tested that :-).
