I am wondering if this enhancement to authentication will solve a
problem we are having whereby Windows XP client machines that are not
domain members cannot access a Samba server which is a domain member.

Currently, the Windows client is challenged for credentials but no
combination of domain\user is accepted. We expected that even if the
client workstation is not on the domain, the user could still supply
domain credentials when connecting to Samba.

A trace seems to show the behavior described below where the workstation
name is used to qualify the username for authentication regardless of
what is entered. If I am reading the announcement correctly, it sounds
like the domain name will now be used which should address our issue.
