messages.tdb growing to 4GB (4294971392 bytes)

Folks,

Has anyone else come across situations where messages.tdb grows to 4GB?

It seems smbd is no longer able to access this file after it reaches
this size.

-rw------- 1 root root 4294971392 2009-06-03 09:39 messages.tdb

tdbdump segfaults when trying to read it:

[root at sterling samba]# tdbdump messages.tdb
Segmentation fault

tdbbackup also segfaults when trying to access it:

[root at sterling samba]# tdbbackup messages.tdb
Segmentation fault

There is no log info at loglevel 1 regarding messages.tdb. Any higher
log level seems to prevent occurrence, but damages samba performance also.

Samba 3.3.4, running on x86_64.

I do not know if it is relevant, but the site just increased memory from
4GB to 16GB to avoid going into swap. There are up to 75 Windows XP
clients - previously going into about 500MB swap.

Any suggestions for how to diagnose this?

- John T.
