Downloading files with smbclient from terminal is twice as fast than using nautilus or dolphin smbmount (smbfs) (66MByte/s against 30MB/s). I tried with a ubuntu 9.10 and opensuse 11.2 client. Same with upload (30 against 20). When I use instead an Ubuntu server - the same. All have some recent 3.4 Samba version. I had the same befor with ubuntu 9.04 am opensuse 11.0.

This is almost certainly due to Volker's pipelining work with
smbclient and the async client libraries. The same work needs
doing in cifsfs (as smbfs is deprecated it won't get done
there).

Jeremy.
