Hm, I'm pretty sure the protocol for talking to ntlm_auth is exactly like the 
ntlmssp protocol. However, I'm not sure if many people are using the spnego 
helper, so it might be pretty untested.

I seem to remember that using ntlm_auth in server mode requires access rights 
to the winbindd privileged pipe. so you need to make sure that is accounted 
for.
