Fix for bug #6291 - force user stop working

Karolin, please add to v3-2-test and v3-3-test.
This has been confirmed by the bug reporters.

I'll push the same fix to master, and send the
fix for v3-4-test, but please commit only *after*
the 3.4.0 release.
