Samba and OpenVPN: where are file access delays coming from?

Hi fellow Samba'ers,

I just can't figure out what is the problem here. I have set up OpenVPN
which nicely connects, no issues here.
I can mount the Samba shares through the VPN and browse through the folders
with an acceptable delay.

- And here come the delays - But when I want to cut / paste a file, or view
its properties, massive delays occurs depending largely on the file's size:
it appears the entire file has to be downloaded just to view the properties.
You can imagine the delay with only 50kb/s upload when the file is over a
few megabyte.

Surprisingly or not, dragging the file to my desktop works a normal speeds -
just as fast as my FTP connection over the VPN. With or without the tunnel,
FTP speeds are about 41 kb/s. So I'm not blaming my tunnel, for now;-)

Any help would be immensely appreciated!

cheers,

Jeroen
