I'm working on it now, although I'm still awaiting others' opinions
about whether an API/ABI breakage is acceptable.  Now's the time to do
it if ever there was (or will be) a time.  If things go well, I hope
to have it all working tomorrow.  I'll then need help with how you
generate a new version number on a shared library to make it obvious
that this is not backward compatible.  I've never done that before.
