This looks like a good approach.  I wasn't looking forward to publishing
so much of the internal work in progress, but I was equally not looking
forward to fighting git rebase or trying to split it up. 

This tree was actually rebased to start with, but it broke at one point
(and rebase occasionally does some very strange things) and it was
easier to merge after that. 

I'll look over the (actually not that many) commit messages in my
current tree, to ensure I'm not loosing any details that should be in
the commits or code comments.
