There is bug #5592 (https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5592)
that addresses the conceptual errors in creation and installation of
our shared libraries. (Wrong link direction, links missing in 
installation.) There have also been several mails about these
problems on the samba mailing list.
"make install" is broken for libraries in 3.2.
Packagers have their workarounds for this
(as they had for libsmbclient a long time..).

I have fixed that completely in v3-3-test 5 weeks ago. 
Since the fix required many changes in the internal workings
of configure.in and Makefile.in, the changeset is actually
comparatively big. I have presented the the changes in a mail
to samba-technical on July 7:

where I also asked whether the changes should be picked to v3-2-stable.
Unfortunately, the mail was unanswered. :-)
But Jerry has uttered in the samba at samba.org thread

that he would like to see this fixed in 3.2.2.

After re-discussing this with Karolin, I plan to push these changes
to v3-2-test tomorrow, if noone utters serious concerns until
then. (Otherwise I could add a patch fixing lib/link installation
with library version numbers hard coded in the Makefile.in.)
