tdb vs love

On MacOS X 10.4/Intel I  get:

When trying to link with tdb when built within installed samba4 I get  
back:

/usr/bin/ld: /usr/samba4/lib/libtdb.dylib is input for the dynamic  
link editor, is not relocatable by the static link editor again

When trying to build with a static lib from a standalone built tdb  
(static), I get back:

ld: common symbols not allowed with MH_DYLIB output format with the - 
multi_module option
/usr/local/tdb/lib/libtdb.a(tdb.o) definition of common _tdb_null  
(size 16)
/usr/bin/libtool: internal link edit command failed

How should I use tdb ?
