I have added some notes:

we could use a persistent LDAP cache in winbind, and update it with the
LDAP_SERVER_DIRSYNC control or with DsGetNCChanges() which should also
work as member server, but didn't give the password attributes.

the RPC layer needs some work for async calls and ntlm v1.
