Assuming you move forward with this effort...

Since you are changing the idmap datastructure I suggest adding some
signature and versioning fields to the beginning.  That way idmap can
check them during registration to guard against old idmappers lying
about.

Second, you may want to consider a version negotiation packet exchange
right after opening the socket.  Making it more complicated, I know, but
might come in handy in the future.
