Reference our conversation a few weeks ago about fopen() and smbsh:

I thought you might be interested in this thread where I hoped to get some
useful information from the glibc folks about how to have fopen() work
properly with smbsh.  As you can see from this thread, it's likely to be a
non-trivial effort...
