This *very* much looks like you are using 'security=share'.
I'm pretty sure much has changed since 2.2.12 in that area.

Is there a way that you change your configuration to
'security=user'? security=share is rather deprecated these
days.

Nevertheless, you might want to send your smb.conf and a
debug level 10 log of smbd up to that failure. If it's
large, send it off-list.
