access denied error

i install an image that includes samba 3.0.20 on a Linux machine.
on another machine i change winbindd code and load the new executable
to the machine and restart the winbindd process and i get the following when
try to run 'wbinfo -a tester%tester':
plaintext password authentication succeeded
challenge/response password authentication failed
error code was NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED (0xc0000022)
error messsage was: winbind client not authorized to use
winbindd_pam_auth_crap. Ensure permissions on
/var/lib/samba/winbindd_privileged are set correctly.
Could not authenticate user tester with challenge/response

why am i getting this?
which files/directories should i delete before restarting winbindd so i
won't get this error?
