that sounds good. Can you tell which kernel version this will be
in or give any pointers to it?

Yes, that's why I'm asking for. It would be nice to have a generic 
birth time stamp as it exists on some BSD systems but I think there 
are no such efforts on Linux. So to use it with JFS there is a 
filesystem specific hook needed.
