I tested that on a SLES9 SP3 machine (openldap2-client-2.2.24-4.12).
In the ldap_open manpage, the errors section says
"If an error occurs, these routines will return NULL and errno should be 
set appropriately."

I can confirm this. There has been no error output while doing the net ads 
join.
So I added some code to tell the user which server it was trying to 
contact and the error returned by the OpenLDAP library.

Volker has already checked my patch with revision 17536.
