No, there's no particular reason. For me it was just
convenience, as in Samba3 we only have a single
subdirectory. And as I had to make a number of cosmetic
changes, automatic merging is difficult.

The changes I made are the unsigned char -> char change, and
I had to indent all internal function definitions so that
mkproto does not pick them up.

But if you are really keen, I can create the subdirs.
